NTRC calls for an immediate decision before millions are lost to the local community and jobs go permanently. The decision by Xstrata to place McArthur River Mine on indefinite care and maintenance is not surprising but nonetheless a disaster for the area, says the NTRC.
Despite the fact that there are claims that this is a "win", the local Boorooloola community is now in danger of losing $32m Community Benefits Trust, 46 local sustainable jobs, more than 20 traineeships and apprenticeships, education and training programs, support to the local medical centre and a wide range of community and social support.
In the wider sense, the NT potentially loses 300 jobs, many millions in revenue, financial support to the wider community through sponsorships and a great deal of credibility.
"This is not brinkmanship - this decision reflects the very real danger that this important mine can close" says the NTRC's CEO Scott Perkins.
The NTRC calls on all parties to work this out.
If there is any more that can be done, practically, politically and legislatively, it should be done now,"
"This sad situation sends a negative message to the mining industry about doing business in NT's remote areas - a significant sovereign risk issue has now been exposed," says Perkins.
The NTRC adds its voice to those calling on Minister Garrett to make a quick decision.
"The longer this goes on, the difficult it is to open the mine again, and we may well see it in danger of permanent closure."
"We need a decision now" says Perkins.
Ends 21 January 2009
