The NTRC supports Xstrata Zinc in its call for an urgent action on the future of its McArthur River Mine and calls on Minister Garrett to make an immediate decision.
The Minister has all the information and has now seen the site and discussed concerns with local landowners, says the NTRC. "Further, " says CEO Scott Perkins, "the issues surrounding this matter are now extremely well known and have been closely examined several times through court processes and Departmental analysis."
"There is no reason to hold this operation up any longer. This decision can be made now" he added.
The NTRC believes that the way in which this matter is now handled will send a message to all miners about added sovereign risk when operating in the Northern Territory.
"Not only do we have to contend with complex negotiations under current legislation, but the way in which these matters can leap out of the woodwork provides a huge disincentive develop good deposits and potentially adds significant cost to development" he says.
The human side of this matter is evident in the potential loss of jobs for Borroloola people.
"At a time when it is more crucial than ever to provide meaningful and sustainable employment in remote areas we are faced with the possibility that hundreds of jobs and millions in community assistance will stop dead if a decision is not made soon," says Perkins.
"The real losers are the remote job seekers."

The NTRC believes that a decision can be made now on the future of McArthur River Mine.
Background:
Minister Garrett has visited the site and has all the information that he needs to make an immediate decision. MRM is currently continuing production by processing sub-viable ore in an effort to keep the plant operating but this can only continue until 26 January. Closure will threaten some 300 jobs and other community support programs in the area. |
