NT Mining Industry Mourns loss of Joe Fisher, AM

The Northern Territory Resources Council mourns the passing of legendary NT Mining identity Joe Fisher, AM last night.

Joe came to the NT in 1954 as Field Manager for Northern Uranium Development NL, and in subsequent years was instrumental in the discovery of much of the ore in the South Alligator region.  Subsequently in more senior roles he was intimately involved in many of the now iconic mining ventures of the subsequent 40 years.  Coronation Hill/El Sherana, Moline, Evelyn, Goodall and Merlin numbered amongst his successes.

A tireless campaigner for the industry, Joe championed development of mining in the Territory, rightly seeing it as a vehicle for social and economic development in remote areas.

Also a politician of note, Joe served as a non-official member of the Legislative Council and later as Member for Fannie Bay and proved to be an outspoken and fearless advocate for the Northern Territory.

Later, as weekly columnist, he informed and entertained readers of the NT News.

Joe was instrumental in guiding development of the Chamber of Mines (later Minerals Council and then Resources Council) over many years and was awarded life membership in recognition of his advocacy of the Council.

The NTRC Members and staff pass on their most sincere condolences to Joe’s wife Eleanor and his large extended family.
