NTRC Welcomes Inpex Progress

NTRC welcomes progress on the Inpex project but cautions that the Territory can’t relax.

The announcement that Inpex has moved to the next planning stage with its Darwin plant is great news for the Territory, says NTRC.

“While this may be just another normal phase in the planning for this plant the fact that the project has progressed this far so smoothly gives a great amount of confidence that it is really here” says CEO Scott Perkins.

“When added to other infrastructure projects on the planning board, Inpex construction should go some way towards providing a buffer against the worst of the recessionary pressures that are hammering the economy at the moment”

“Congratulations to Inpex, and well done to all those who showed the commitment and energy to get the project to this important stage” he added.

But there is need for some caution, says the NTRC, as many of the mining jobs that are now disappearing will not translate directly into the construction sector.

“I think we are still going to see a continuation of the general downturn in our industry while commodity prices remain low, so the great times of high activity of the past few years are unlikely to return quickly.”

“For that reason we call on the Government to continue to support development in the resources sector, continue to provide incentives for exploration and to look for new ways to ensure jobs are retained” he said.

“We see tremendous enthusiasm generated for Inpex and we call on all players, Government and non-Government not to relax because Inpex is underway.”

Urgent Decision Needed on McArthur River Mine

The NTRC supports Xstrata Zinc in its call for an urgent action on the future of its McArthur River Mine and calls on Minister Garrett to make an immediate decision.

The Minister has all the information and has now seen the site and discussed concerns with local landowners, says the NTRC. "Further, " says CEO Scott Perkins, "the issues surrounding this matter are now extremely well known and have been closely examined several times through court processes and Departmental analysis."

"There is no reason to hold this operation up any longer. This decision can be made now" he added.

NT Mining Industry Mourns loss of Joe Fisher, AM

The Northern Territory Resources Council mourns the passing of legendary NT Mining identity Joe Fisher, AM last night.

McArthur River decision a blow to all mines
Yesterday’s decision by the Federal Court to uphold an appeal by Traditional Owners throws confusion into an already uncertain market, says the Northern Territory Resources Council.

CEO Scott Perkins says the problem is one of certainty and exposure to the risk of changing decision making processes.

“While not necessarily a matter of sovereign risk” he says, “this ability to have several bites at the cherry adds considerable uncertainty to the mining business.”

“Xstrata has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in developing this mine, all of which is now at risk” he added.

China visit
CEO Scott Perkins recently accompanied the NT Government’s trade delegation to China.  The week long trip was tightly scheduled including meetings with the two major mining representative organisations, a number of Chinese companies and a brief attendance at China Mining Conference.

While the purpose of the trip was to promote the NT as an investment location, it offered the opportunity to explore the possibility of facilitating links between NTRC members and investors.
